About Dr. Aller

Thomas Aller, OD, FBCLA, graduated from UC Berkeley School of Optometry and for 30 years has been researching clinical methods for the control of myopia progression.

After receiving the world’s earliest patent for a method of myopia control, Dr. Aller began collaborating with Professor Brien Holden and the Vision Cooperative Research Centre (now the Brien Holden Vision Institute) on their myopia program. They share several patents.

As a consultant and advisor, Dr. Aller works with a number of companies on myopia control contacts, spectacles and pharmaceuticals. He is currently conducting clinical trials on a novel myopia control lens design and an anti-hyperopia multifocal lens design.

In 2016, Dr. Aller launched Myappia, a myopia progression tracking app that was recently incorporated into Lenstar Myopia, an optical biometer (and the corresponding software) that eye doctors use for myopia detection, management and patient education.

Dr. Aller now serves as a scientific and clinical advisor to TreeHouse Eyes and as a clinical advisor to Myopia.Care. He also worked recently on Essilor’s Myopia Matters task force and was a participating member in the International Myopia Institute’s white papers project.

Currently a Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Aller also served recently as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston College of Optometry.

Dr. Aller is a fellow of the British Contact Lens Association and an associate member of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists. He is the 2018 recipient of the Award of Excellence from the Global Specialty Lens Symposium and the 2019 recipient of the Garland Clay Award from the American Academy of Optometry.
